Learning to Care for your Teeth and Mouth

Good dental hygiene is very important to keep your teeth strong and healthy. Here are some tips on how to take care of your dental hygiene.

Brush Regularly

It is recommended that you brush your teeth after every meal. This will remove particles of food that remain stuck to the teeth. If morsels of food remain inside your mouth, it will decompose, and bacteria will act on it to form acid which causes tooth decay.

Brushing your teeth the correct way is as important as it is to brush regularly. Harsh scrubbing may erode your tooth enamel and damage your gums causing bleeding. Brushing gently using a soft toothbrush is more effective in cleaning between the teeth because soft bristles can splay out getting into the nooks and crannies. Using a toothpaste that contains fluoride will help to keep your teeth strong and healthy. Remember to brush your tongue, as it is the major site for bacteria inside the mouth.

Flossing

Flossing not only removes those hard-to-reach pieces of food that are stuck between teeth, but it also helps in removing plaque from in-between your teeth. Plaque is a major causative of tooth decay, so flossing is quite beneficial. Experts recommend flossing your teeth before going to bed every day to remove the plaque and any food from in between your teeth.

Examine your Teeth Regularly

Get into the habit of examining your teeth in the mirror. Look for any changes that remain for more than two weeks. Observe your tongue as well. The inside of your mouth should always look pink and not pale or yellow. Look for any chipped or broken tooth. If you find anything unusual inside your mouth, consult your dentist right away.

Check for Bad Breath

If you are suffering from bad breath, your dental professionals can help you identify where it is coming from. The number one cause of bad breath comes from under the gums and on the tongue. Another cause of bad breath is from chronic post nasal drip. Finally, bad breath can come from digestive problems particularly by foods that have strong odors such as onions and garlic.

Eat Healthily

Eating food that is healthy for your teeth and mouth is essential. Consumption of large amounts of sugar is not good for your teeth.  Calcium-rich sources of food like milk, cheese, and yogurt are beneficial for teeth. Overconsumption of garlic and onions will cause bad breath. Plan your diet in a way that does not ruin your oral health. You may consult your dentist for better guidance.
